Radio Essay: Little Rock Reed.

From The Final Straw

The world needs to know the truth about Timothy Little Rock Reed, whose criticism of the Ohio prison system made him a target of assassination by Ohio governmental officials.
Little Rock was sent to Lucusville in the early 1980’s for theft of drugs and robberies. A Lakota Sioux, Little Rock began practicing traditional religious beliefs and pushed prison fascists to accommodate Native American practices.
He also learned law and began helping other prisoners, making the prison staff hostile. Then he published The American Indian in the White Mans Prison: A story of Genocide, and other articles.
In 1990, the Ohio Adult Parole Authority granted Little Rock a parole but demanded he sign a “contract” that would allow prisoncrats to control his speech activities. When he refused, his parole was rescinded until 1992.
When finally released, he became director of the Native American Research and Rehabilitation Project and wrote, Today’s Prison Administrators were Trained by Fascists: and What About Tomorrow? He spoke at Ohio State University about suppression of religion by the Ohio Prison System. Shortly after, the Chair of the Ohio Parole Board issued a directive that Little Rock was not to speak again. He was forced to cancel speaking engagements and was prevented from appearing before the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Indian Affairs.
And that was when friends of Little Rock still inside Lucusville wrote to him to warn him that they overheard prison officials talking about a plan to murder Little Rock.

Just weeks before Little Rock was to complete his parole, his parole officer notified him his parole was being revoked. Further, Little Rock’s parole officer was instructed not to let Little Rock have the court hearing the law required; instead, without court approval, the parole officer was to drive Little Rock straight back to Lucusville where Little Rock has already been warned prison officials conspired to kill him. Knowing his life was in danger, Little Rock fled.

He was arrested on an Ohio warrant in New Mexico, and faced extradition back to Ohio custody. He fought it all the way back to the New Mexico Supreme Court, seeking asylum from Ohio.
Typically, extradition is a formality. In modern times, no state has ever granted asylum from another state. Ohio claimed Little Rock was a fugitive from justice.
I’d like to read a few excerpts from the New Mexico Supreme Courts decision, which I hope to have scanned and available at seanswain.org. Keep in mind, these are quotes in The New Mexico Supreme Court’s own words:
“The focus of our analysis is whether Reed is a ‘ fugitive from justice’; the facts demonstrate conclusively that Ohio’s conduct toward Reed was not just. Reed is not a fugitive from justice. Rather, he is a refugee from injustice” ***
“Reed fled the apparent conspiratorial intent of state officials of state officials to subject him to death.” *** “It is the prison officials themselves, who threatened him harm.” *** “Reed has shown beyond a reasonable doubt, with persuasive and uncontroverted evidence, that he left Ohio because he risked death or great bodily harm at the hands of prison officials.” *** “Reed has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that prison officials expressed an intention to cause him death.” *** “He reasonably feared he would be returned to Lucusville, where prison officials would carry out their threats to kill him.” *** “Reed faced the deprivation of his life” *** “The deprivation of his life would have been carried out under color of state law.” *** “Reed did not flee from justice, he fled from injustice.”

The New Mexico Supreme Court granted Little Rock asylum from the state of Ohio. That puts Ohio on a list with Pinochet’s Chile and Castro’s Cuba as a banana republic where citizens must flee for their lives for telling the truth about the tyrants in charge.
Including, by the way, ODRC Director, Gary Mohr, who has silenced me at the supermax facility for publicly exposing his cybercrimes and identity piracy.

Shortly after Little Rock was granted asylum, he died in a single car crash in the middle of the night on a deserted New Mexico highway. The cause of the crash was never explained. There were no known witnesses.

We can’t forget Little Rock Reed. It’s up to us to keep the fire burning. Then, Little Rock lives.

This is anarchist Sean Swain from Ohio’s supermax facility, if you’re listening…  You Are the Resistance!
